Struggle With Vitiligo

Many people simply refuse to believe that Michael Jackson did not want to turn himself white. Medialoid, especially, accused him of trying to deny his race. They pointed to the protective umbrella and mask that Vitiligo forced him to use as evidence of his growing “eccentricity.”

Michael Jackson had Lupus, an autoimmune disease. He also had Vitiligo, a skin disorder that is commonly associated with Lupus.

After years of fighting his Vitiligo and covering it up with various cosmetics, Michael chose the final solution, what many people elect to do when the disease escalates to advanced stages. This procedure is called Depigmentation. Depigmentation removes the remaining pigment so all of the skin is one tone. Depigmentation results in extreme sensitivity to the sun and increased risk of various forms of skin cancer.

Because of reduced immunity and his susceptibility to sun related complications, Michael kept his skin covered, wore face masks, and used umbrellas to protect his health.
